Serial No.: ___________________________
(Found on the underside, near where the ribs would be.)

Date of Original Decommission: ___________________________

Date of Reactivation: ___________________________

Registered Owner: ___________________________

Pre-Activation Checklist

Confirm the following before proceeding. Do not skip steps. Skipped steps cannot be recovered later.

  • Unit has been cleaned of prior residue (see Appendix C, “Grief”)
  • Favorite chair has been left in its original position
  • You have practiced saying her name out loud, alone, at a normal volume
  • You have accepted that Section 4(b) is non-negotiable
  • You are not doing this because someone told you to

Section 2: Preparing the Home

The Unit may experience temporary distress upon encountering changes to the domestic environment. Where practical, customers are advised to restore frequently occupied rooms to their approximate condition at the time of decommission.

Photographs may be displayed.

New photographs should be introduced gradually.

Mirrors should not be covered.

Do not remove mirrors after the Unit has noticed them.

If the Unit cries upon seeing you, do not assume recognition.

REVISION 8.2: The preceding guidance has been withdrawn.

Section 4: Known Limitations

(b) The Unit will return with full continuity of memory up to the moment of decommission. It will not know what you did after.

It will ask, in its first hour, what year it is.

It may ask this more than once.

This is normal.

This is not the Unit malfunctioning.

This is the Unit doing the math.

The following will not be restored, regardless of servicing:

  • The particular way she said your name when she was annoyed with you
  • Any grudge she’d already let go of before the end
  • The smell of the coat she was wearing that winter

We are not able to guarantee emotional fidelity above 74%. This is industry standard. Competitors who claim higher are lying, or have not yet been sued.

Memories formed immediately before decommission may return out of sequence.

Customers are strongly advised not to correct them.

Section 5: Frequently Asked Questions

Will she know me?

Probably.

Will she love me?

This question falls outside the terms of the warranty.

Can new memories be added?

No.

Can existing memories be removed?

No.

What if there are things I would prefer she did not remember?

See previous answer.

Can revival be reversed?

Yes.

Please note that the Unit will be aware that this has happened before.

Technician’s Notes

Owner declined the extended diagnostic.

Owner asked if the Unit would remember the dog.

Owner was informed that the dog was not part of the original scan and cannot be added retroactively.

Owner asked whether photographs would help.

Owner was informed that photographs may assist with factual understanding but do not constitute memory.

Owner sat with this for eleven minutes before signing.

Owner asked, quietly, if it would hurt her.

Told owner: her, no. You, possibly.

Final Authorization

I understand that revival is not restoration.

I understand that what returns will be closer to a translation than a copy: the meaning intact, the rhythm slightly off.

I understand that she may remember things I have spent years learning not to.

I understand that on the third day she will ask why I look older than I should, and I will have to decide, in real time, how much of the truth a person deserves to wake up to.

I understand that she did not ask to be revived.

I authorize activation.

(If your hand is shaking too badly to sign, please wait twenty-four hours and try again. This is also normal. This, too, is the Unit doing the math.)
