Hi! I’m Ginna, Stationary Supply Warehouse Ltd.’s AI customer service agent. If you have an outstanding balance with SSW Ltd., please pay it here.
How may I assist you today?
I need a refund for two dozen LaserRightTM 520 nm Laser Pens, but the warrantee policy does not have instructions for defective products. How can I get my money back?
I’m sorry to hear that you want to return the LaserRightTM 520 nm Laser Pens. Why would you like to make this return?
I don’t want to make a regular return. I’m sending them back because they are defective: they do not emit light at 520 nm as advertised.
The LaserRightTM 520 nm Laser Pens emit monochromatic light at 520 nm. They come in three colours: black, blue and red ink. I can direct you to the product description here.
No, they don’t emit light at 520 nm! Some emit ~540 nm light, but the rest are staggeringly different shades of green. One is yellow!?!
I did not spend over $1,000 on yellow laser pointers. I didn’t even purchase any green laser pointers. I require 524 nm wavelength light or shorter for an experiment, and this is not it.
The LaserRightTM 520 nm Laser Pens emit monochromatic light at 520 nm. They are available in three colours: black, blue and red ink. You can read the product description here.
If you would like to make a return, please fill out Form 3A here and select ‘Unsatisfactory’ as the explanation. If less than 30 days have elapsed since your purchase, you will be refunded in full.
I made this purchase 64 days ago because the shipping took forever! They arrived yesterday.
However, the Competitions Act s. 52, 74.01 entitles me a full refund if the product is mis-advertised. How do I report a defective product??
I’m sorry, it sounds like you are ineligible for a full refund. If you would still like to return the product, I can offer you 10% of your purchase price in store credit. To redeem your store credit, please fill out Form 3A here and select ‘Unsatisfactory’.

Would you like to try again??

What is the address for SSW’s Regina office?
1580 Angus St, Regina, SK S4T 1Z1
…
The pages, still warm from the printer, were tucked in a yellow manilla folder. The folder was bundled into a satchel, and it rode shotgun as I drove from the university to the office supply store.
I should have known ordering from this company was sketchy, I scolded myself. But it was so much cheaper than Fisher Scientific.
My hands strangled the steering wheel. Crossing the Wascana Lake on Broad St., the ice loomed darkly in the shadows of bordering skyscrapers. I was already reciting the exact words I would be directing towards the most senior employee I could find.
I parked two blocks away. The clouds looked as if they had been foiled in orange gold, and the flakes had fallen to decorate the sparkling, dirt encrusted slush nestled between the road and the sidewalk. Salt crunched under my boots as I crossed the street and composed my face.
Plywood stood behind every window on the lowest floor of the stone building with 1580 etched into its side. A bold red ‘SOLD’ sign was plastered across the doors, which were locked.
I rolled my eyes, digging out my phone.
I should have checked the address instead of trusting that damn AI!
However, when I pulled it up, the address was correct. I squeezed my phone tightly.
I stood in front of the building, uncomprehending. This didn’t make sense! It couldn’t be closed… I must have made a mistake.
Before completely losing it, I checked that I’d arrived at the correct building. Yep. My blue dot sat right next to the red pin.
I moved into problem solving mode: I marched around the block for a minute or two, trying to find a notice about a location change or a stairway to the second floor. Spotting an open bank, I ducked in and asked the teller for directions.
He chuffed. “They closed like a month ago. Did you not check online?!?”
“I did…” I was defensive now. “Their website looks active.”
He pulled out his phone, typed something in, and turned it around to show me: below the SSW Ltd. website link was headline after headline about their bankruptcy and subsequent closure, effective January 1st.
I returned to my car in defeat. I tossed the manilla folder on the passenger seat, and it landed roughly, creasing the corner.
I banged the steering wheel in frustration, and the horn blared, startling me and the growing crowd of passing commuters. I didn’t bother mouthing an apology as I slumped in my seat.
Searching online, there wasn’t a single branch open anymore. Their bankruptcy also meant they were no longer offering refunds of any kind.
The only option I have to recover the grant money is through small claims court!?!! I bristled, smoothing the fold in the envelope as I prepared to inform my supervisor.
Driving back to the university, I glimpsed the building as I paused for a van attempting to park. The orange sunrise was reflected in each window, obscuring the boards and placing a thin veil over the company’s death.
…
“–so we can’t get the money back,” I finished. I stood before my supervisor’s desk, hands clasping the folder like a shield.
I waited for him to raise his voice, or worse yet, insist I figure out how to file a claim.
“Take the rest of the week off.”
I looked up in surprise. He’d been listening diligently, but now he was composing an email, body facing his angled monitor.
“You’ve spent enough time on this. Take today and Friday to get your head on straight and come back ready to move on.”
“But–”
He cut me off with a glance.
“See you on Monday.” I slunk out of the office, ashamed for having wasted so much time.
Yet, the further I got from my supervisor and the closer I got to my car, the angrier I felt.
I pulled up the website on my phone and watched it load seamlessly. The page’s perfect self-assembly bothered me the most.
Shouldn’t something look or feel different without anyone behind the wheel?
I wanted to deface the website: Change the ‘50% Sale’ header to ‘100% Sold’. Erase the infrastructure, leaving the domain with an infinite loading spinner. Paint ‘CLOSED’ across the logo in sticky black smears for all to see.
Then it occurred to me…
Who can stop me, if nobody is in the car?
…
Sitting on my couch with my lap desk, feet propped on the coffee table, I got to work.
Starting simple, I copy/pasted the same sentence into Ginna’s chat repeatedly, iterating on my previous jailbreak attempt.
It had worked on other models, but someone thought to patch this by forcing the chat to sleep for a full minute and reboot every time a prohibited instruction was entered.
Ugh. Competence.
Next, I researched the website’s hosting service, looking for a known backdoor. That was a bust, but I did stumble across the hosting plans: they offered one-time purchase lifetime domain ownership.
Never mind the website outliving the company, this website will outlive me!!
It took all day, but eventually I could read and edit the website’s code. Examining each line, I was overwhelmed by the urge to start deleting; anything could be load-bearing.
My saboteur’s instinct had grown over the course of the day, producing more ideas that could wreak havoc, but would any of it warn their customers?
I’d been scouring the website and interacting with Ginna for days without realising the phone’s queue wasn’t moving and some web pages were disconnected because the company had gone out of business.
I kept returning to the idea that SSW’s website should look as decrepit as its storefronts.
…
I printed the final logs, gently sliding the pages into their yellow resting place.
Sentimental? Yes. But also good bookkeeping practice.
