A list of Calgary literary magazines we love
Calgary has a small but vibrant literary community. Here are a few magazines we love especially:
- Filling Station: One of Calgary’s (and perhaps Canada’s) most recognizable experimental literary magazines. It releases two issues annually.
- FreeFall Magazine: Published by the FreeFall Literary Society of Calgary, this magazine focuses on “exquisite writing”. It also hosts an annual Prose and Poetry Contest
- NōD Magazine: Housed at the University of Calgary, this publication is run by undergraduate students. It focuses on poetry, prose, and visual art. You’ll find a very good read there.
- The Prairie Journal: This publication is the oldest on the list, and has been a staple of Western Canadian literature since 1983.
- Calgary Poetry Magazine: Part of the broader Wax Poetry and Art network. It is dedicated to showcasing poets from the Blue Sky City.
- Exclamation Mark Literary Journal: Founded February 2026. We’re the “only” online-first outlet for poetry and prose in Calgary.
